Billy Hayes on Newsnight

NEWSNIGHT.

On Thursday Newsnight on BBC2 covered the upcoming industrial action with an exclusive story on the Royal Mail dispute.

The Communication Workers Union is appalled by details in a Royal Mail document which expose that the company wants to sideline the union.

The internal Royal Mail document, called ‘Dispute: Strategic Overview’, says that Royal Mail is prepared to continue with non-agreement and makes threats about taking facility time away from CWU reps.

Billy Hayes, CWU general secretary, called the document “a cynical attempt to derecognise the union”.

Billy went on to raise concerns about the role of the government, after Lord Mandelson appeared to show knowledge and familiarity with the document and ruled out the use of ACAS in an interview on Channel 4 News on Thursday evening.

This week the CWU has also learnt that an event jointly planned between the union and Royal Mail called ‘Ban Bullying Week’ has been pulled. This comes at a time when the issue of bullying and harassment is increasingly raised as a problem.

CWU remains available for talks to resolve the current dispute and reach an agreement which leads to strike action no longer being taken.
