A giant 20-foot high post box will make its way across London next week continuing a national campaign tour aimed at overturning the government’s plans to sell off Royal Mail. The huge red pillar box will tour the capital’s markets, festivals and key visitor attractions along with a giant seven-foot postcard. Starting at the Southwark Festival on Saturday 11th July the postal icons will also visit the South Bank, Upper Street, Romford Market, Sutton High Street and Parliament Square.
Communication Workers Union representatives, postal workers and politicians will assemble along the route. The public will have the opportunity to sign a petition and get their hands on limited edition postal-themed freebies. Martin Walsh, CWU London divisional rep, said: “Royal Mail is a vital public service for all people in London. We have the highest concentration of businesses and people in the Greater London area, and need a reliable, single-priced postal service. “The government needs to commit to a keeping a fully publicly owned mail service. Privatising Royal Mail would be a political and financial disaster. We’ve got a first class postal service; privatising it would make it second class. “Privatisation would inevitably lead to higher stamp prices, lower wages and the possibility of further post office closures, job losses and service reductions for unprofitable rural areas. “Royal Mail makes nearly £1 million profit every day. It’s a successful public company that should be modernised under full public ownership. It’s important that we all send a clear message to Westminster.”
The giant post box and postcard, along with public petitions and postal-themed freebies will be at the following locations next week before heading to the south west:
London Saturday 11th July Southwark Festival 11am – 10pm
Monday 13th July South Bank 10 am
Tuesday 14th July Upper Street, Islington (Angel Station) Emily Thornberry MP; 8.30am Photo Opportunity
Wednesday 15th July Parliament Square Westminster As many MPs as possible 11am – 3pm Photo Opportunity
Thursday 16th July Sutton High Street 9.30am Labour Group Leader; 11am Photo Opportunity, Shafi Khan PPC
